General Tips

Below are some general crime prevention tips to be aware of and follow in your daily routine which may reduce your chances of becoming a victim. Always stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. If you see something unsafe, out of place, or something that makes you nervous, trust your gut instinct and report it to the Public Safety department immediately.

Walking

  • Plan ahead of time the safest route to your destination.
  • Whenever possible, walk in groups after dark.
  • Never walk while listening to headphones or talking on your cellphone; these activities can distract you from your surroundings and criminals may recognize this as an opportunity to strike.
  • Always walk in well lit areas; avoid dark areas, especially those next to shrubs, woods, vacant lots or alleyways.
  • Carry your purse close to your body or if carrying a wallet in your front pocket or a jacket pocket.
  • Always walk towards oncoming traffic so you can see what is coming.
  • If at any time you feel uncomfortable when someone is walking behind you, cross the street, change directions, or walk towards the nearest populated area.
  • If you believe someone is following you, go into a nearby store or other open business, call Public Safety (or 911 if off campus) immediately.

It is strongly advised that all members of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Community or those who frequent it program the Public Safety main line
(617-632-9111) into their cell phones for quick access in an emergency.

Parking Garages

  • Always note where your car is parked so you can easily find it when leaving.
  • Always park in a well lit area of the garage.
  • For added safety, try to park as close to the elevator or stairwell as possible.
  • Have your keys out and ready as you approach your vehicle; check inside your vehicle before getting in.
  • Always lock your car doors and leave the windows rolled up when driving.
  • Do not leave valuables in plain sight within your vehicle.
  • Whenever possible at night time have someone walk with you to your car; if you cannot do so and do not feel safe walking alone, contact the Public Safety office to request an escort.
  • If you notice any strange persons in the area, believe you are being followed, or see anything out of place, contact Public Safety immediately.
  • The Public Safety Dept. can be reached by dialing the main number from your cellphone (617-632-9111) or using one of the yellow emergency call boxes located throughout the campus.

Elevators

  • Look in the elevator before getting in.
  • If there is someone already in the elevator who makes you nervous do not enter and wait for the next one.
  • If you are on the elevator alone and someone enters who makes you nervous, immediately exit the elevator and wait for the next one.
  • Always stand near the controls inside the elevator.
  • If you are ever suddenly attacked or feel that your immediate safety is in danger, press the emergency call button and your call will go directly to the Public Safety dispatch center.
  • Notify the dispatcher of what is happening and help will be immediately sent to your location.

ATM's

There are several ATM machines located in and around the Medical Center campus for your convenience. Whenever using an ATM machine, follow these safety rules:

  • If possible walk to the ATM with a friend or co-worker.
  • If using an ATM after dark, use one that is located in a well-lit area.
  • Look around the area of the ATM; if you see anything that appears out of the ordinary or anyone who seems suspicious, leave the area immediately and notify Public Safety.
  • Have your ATM card and PIN number ready when you approach the ATM.
  • Remain aware of your surroundings and alert while using the ATM; if anyone approaches you who makes you nervous or uncomfortable, cancel the transaction and leave the area immediately.
  • Protect your PIN number and never give it out to others; stand as close to the ATM machine as possible when entering your PIN so others cannot see.
  • Remove your card and receipt and leave the area as soon as your transaction is complete; avoid staying in the area and displaying or counting large amounts of money.
  • Be aware of your surroundings as you leave; if you see anything suspicious or believe anyone is trying to follow you, immediately call Public Safety or the police for help and heads towards a well populated area.
