The entire staff of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham (BID-Needham) is honoring its 120 volunteers who provide Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham with invaluable service to patients, their families, and hospital employees. In particular we want to say a very special thank you to 96-year-old Bill Axt who has provided the hospital with 10, 500 hours of service over the past 24 years.
Mr. Axt will be leaving the volunteer program in May when he moves to the North Shore to be closer to his family. "I have never met a more generous, kind, and devoted volunteer," said Kim Hinden, director of community relations and volunteer services. "Mr. Axt is an extraordinary man. He has taught us all a very valuable lesson about remaining active and participating in life as we age."
Mr. Axt was recognized for his years of dedication during the hospital's annual Volunteer Appreciation Reception on Wednesday, April 14. Several volunteers were honored as well for their many hours of service.
Our distinct group of volunteers clad in dark purple, can be found throughout the hospital. Our volunteers greet patients; escort them to appointments, run The Glover Café and The Gift Box and offer assistance to numerous departments within the hospital.
