Nutrition Clinic at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham
The Registered Dietitians in the Outpatient Nutrition Clinic provide comprehensive nutrition assessments and counseling to meet each individual's nutrition needs. Our goal is to teach patients how food and nutrition affect health and well-being-specifically how nutrition therapy can aid in maintaining overall health and manage health conditions. Nutrition counseling is available for a variety of needs, including, but not limited to the following conditions:
- Heart Disease (high cholesterol, high blood pressure)
- Eating Disorders
- Diabetes (Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes)
- Gastrointestinal problems: Irritable Bowel Disease/Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBD/IBS), Celiac Disease, Diverticular Disease
- Kidney Disease
- Weight Management
- Prenatal Nutrition
Registered Dietitians are considered the food and nutrition experts who can help you meet your health and nutrition goals. Our dietitians are registered with the American Dietetic Association and licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. They are required to participate in ongoing professional education. Some dietitians are certified in specialized areas of nutrition such as diabetes, renal, pediatrics, oncology, weight management and sports nutrition.
Our Registered Dietitians work closely with patients, families and health care providers to improve health and nutritional status. Dietitians can help you reach your goal with some coaching on how to read food labels and manage portion control. Your Visit With A Registered Dietitian
Initial one-on-one visits last about an hour. Follow-up visits are encouraged to monitor your progress and answer any new questions about the best way to reach your goals. Follow-up appointments usually last 30-45 minutes.
Heart health group classes are also now offered. These classes are scheduled for 60-90 minutes.
It is up to you, the patient, to find out if your medical insurance plan covers outpatient nutrition counseling. Please also ask your insurance company if you need a referral for a visit. If you do, please be sure process the referral before your appointment.
Please note: If you have Medicare B as your primary insurance, the only coverage for nutrition counseling is for a diagnosis of Diabetes or Non-dialysis Kidney Disease.

Please park in the main parking lot of the hospital located at 148 Chestnut Street. Please remember to pick-up a parking code at the main desk, as you will need this to exit the parking lot.
You will need to register for all of your visits. Registration is located on the ground floor of the hospital just after you go through the main entrance. Please have your insurance card and identification with you. You will be asked the reason for your nutrition visit. Please provide the actual medical diagnosis from your referring physician, such as: obesity, high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, etc...Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled visit so you will have time to fill out the necessary paperwork in registration.
Nutrition Department Location
After you register for your appointment please walk up the stairs or take the elevator to the first floor to the nutrition office. The Nutrition Department is located in room 117 between the Cardiology Department and the Ambulatory Care waiting area. If the door to room 117 is closed, please knock to let the dietitian know that you have arrived for your appointment.
