The hospital-based Occupational Health Center at BID-Needham delivers advanced, comprehensive occupational health and wellness services for employers and their employees. Dieter Affeln, M.D., a physician who is board-certified in Preventive Medicine (Occupational), provides medical direction for all occupational health services. Dr. Affeln, as well as nurse practitioners and nurses who are specially trained in occupational medicine, provide coverage during normal business hours.
The Center works in close collaboration with the BID-Needham emergency department that provides emergency and urgent care services when the Center is closed. A full range of rehabilitation services - physical therapy, hand therapy and ergonomic assessments are available. In addition, specialty services include second opinions, an industrial foot clinic, independent medical evaluations and case management. The Center also provides prevention and assessment services (pre-placement exams, annual physicals, DOT physicals, drug and alcohol screens, fit for duty exams) as well as other specialized services including immunizations/vaccinations, job analysis, medical surveillance, body mechanics training and more. Finally, the Center offers to employers a growing number of health education and promotion programs such as preventive health screening programs, educational lectures and instructional programs such as CPR, First Aid, smoking cessation and stress management, as well as active participation in company sponsored health fairs..
