Bone Density

Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism. At Beth Israel Deaconess HealthCare-Chelsea, we provide state of the art dual energy X-ray absorptimetry. Bone Density Testing is used to diagnose patients with osteopenia and osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and increased susceptibility to fractures of hips, spine and wrist. For further information about Bone Density Testing, please speak with your primary care doctor.
Patients appropriate for referral are younger adults through elderly women and men, with a focus on post menopausal women.
Insurance Coverage: Most insurance companies will pay for a bone density test once per year; however, some insurance plans allow testing to be performed every two years. Referrals are not required; however, your referring provider must submit an order for this test to be performed.
