Orthopaedics Care for the Elderly

Multidisciplinary management of senior patients by orthopaedic sand geriatric services provide our older patients a safer, more coordinated hospital experience and transition to rehabilitation. Services include:

  • Specialized post-operative care.
  • Programs aimed at minimizing the risk of delirium in seniors admitted for hip fractures or joint replacement surgery.
  • BIDMC's ACOVE unit (Acute Care of the Vulnerable Elderly), a dedicated recovery area within the hospital for elderly orthopaedic patients with multiple, complex medical issues.
  • BIDMC's HOME (hospitalist-orthopaedics medical evaluation) team identifies patients with orthopaedics, medical and geriatric needs who are at risk for post-operative complications due to age, health problems and emotional status.
  • Multidisciplinary management provided by orthopaedics and geriatric services for elderly surgical patients.

Bone Tumor Management

BIDMC's Orthopaedics Oncology Program features multidisciplinary care for those with:

  • Primary and metastatic malignant bone tumors
  • Benign bone tumors
  • Benign and malignant soft tissue tumors

Treatment by a Team of Specialists

Staging and treatment for these rare connective tissue disorders involve the special expertise of a radiologist and pathologist, and a team of medical, surgical and radiation oncologists. The team confers regularly to discuss proper imaging, diagnosis and treatment plans, and participates in clinical trials with the Dana-Farber-Harvard Cancer Center.

Specialized Hand and Elbow Care

BIDMC offers the latest surgical options for upper extremity conditions, including:

  • An innovative hand surgery program
  • The latest advances for restoring mobility to elbow injuries
  • Specialized care for managing arthritis
  • Novel techniques for restoring and maximizing mobility of the wrist and hand

Cartilage Replacement Injections

The department specializes in cartilage repair. We perform a variety of techniques to resurface joints and treat cartilage injuries. We also perform viscosupplementation injections which improve joint lubrication in joints with osteoarthritis.
