Clinical Genetics Program

The clinical genetics program offers comprehensive perinatal genetics services, including genetic counseling regarding risks associated with family history, abnormal ultrasounds, genetic screenings, maternal serum screenings, amniocentesis or CVS results, and advanced maternal age.

The program offers pre-amniocentesis or CVS counseling and counseling for individuals deciding whether or not to have genetic screenings. Genetic counseling for individuals with concerns regarding possible teratogenic exposure is also offered.

In a clinical genetics counseling session, the genetic counselor obtains background medical information from you and/or your partner. This may include information about your own medical history, your pregnancy and your family history. The genetic counselor assesses your chance of having a child with a birth defect or genetic disorder based on this information and will discuss this with you. In some cases, tests can help determine a couple's chance of having a child with a birth defect. Often, prenatal diagnostic tests can be performed during pregnancy to determine if your baby will have a particular genetic condition. The benefits and possible risks of theses tests are discussed with you during your visit.

Genetic counselors have unique medical and counseling training. We carefully explain the significance of the information that we provide to each couple. During one-on-one counseling sessions, we encourage couples to discuss their concerns, and help guide them toward decisions that are right for them. We also work closely with obstetricians and midwives to ensure that all couples receive care that is coordinated and seamless
