BIDMC Shared Governance Model
Coordinating Council
Provides strategic planning for Patient Care Services (PCS) in line with the annual operating goals of BIDMC. The Practice Council, Education and Research Council, Information Systems Council, Quality Council, and Recruitment and Retention Council report directly to the Coordinating Council.
Clinical Nurse Advisory Council
Serves as an advisory council to the Senior Vice President of PCS. The council is a sounding board for new programs and strategic direction.
Advanced Practice Nurse Council
Serves as an advisory council to the Senior Vice President of PCS and Vice President of Ambulatory Services. This council provides the opportunity for advanced practice nurses, along with leadership, to identify areas of improvement and their resolutions within this diverse group of clinicians. This council also provides an opportunity for the advanced practice nurses to share best practices.
Nurse Manager Council
Serves as a forum for nurse managers to discuss hospital operations and develop resolutions to outstanding issues; to improve items such as professional practice, shared governance, through-put (capacity), bed placement, equipment and supplies, etc.
Practice Council
Defines standards, policies, procedures, models, and approaches for clinical practice and care delivery. Identifies the need for development of new or revised standards or policies related to research findings, new technology, and/or new defined practice standards. Ensures consistency of policies and procedures developed at unit and department level, and develops a communication plan for informing and educating clinical nurses about new policies and/or procedures.
Education and Research Council
Advances the profession of nursing and meets nursing strategic priorities through education and research. Identifies and plans education programming, evaluates and fosters relationships with formal education programs, set nursing research priorities, etc.
Quality Council
Provides a forum to develop and review nursing quality indicators. Defines and measures key processes of patient care, monitors performance through data collection, and designs processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness of patient care.
Documentation and Information Systems Council
Provides guidance, expertise, and staff input into the process of development and implementation of effective, easy to use, high quality approaches to documentation of patient care and information systems.
Recruitment and Retention Council
Identifies recruitment and retention activities, including acting as ambassadors of BIDMC at nursing school functions and job fairs; provides feedback on new recruitment or retention programs, etc.
