Drivewise
What is DriveWise?
Recognized as a national model, the DriveWise program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center offers an objective evaluation of driving safety for drivers of all ages who have neurological, psychological, and/or physical impairments that might impair driving safety. The program integrates a standardized on-the-road test with counseling and occupational therapy assessments.
DriveWise clinicians believe that decisions regarding driving safety should be made on the basis of each individual’s functional skills and not on the basis of age or medical diagnosis. Because driving is central to each person’s independence and wellbeing, it is critical to approach decisions about driving competence in a thoughtful, objective manner. DriveWise clinicians work with patients, their families, and their physicians in order to provide a comprehensive overview of each person’s driving abilities.
Evaluation Process
1. Social Worker Assessment
The participant is introduced to the program by the clinical social worker who reviews the role of driving in the individual’s life. Support for the individual and family members is provided.
2. Occupational Therapy Assessment
This session includes assessment of mobility, vision and brake reaction time.
3. On-the-Road Exam
An occupational therapist and driving instructor assess actual driving performance and safety in a specially– equipped car.
4. Written Summary
A written set of recommendations is sent to the participant and the referring physician.
5. Follow-up with Social Worker
The team’s findings are reviewed with the participant and family members. The social worker can provide educational materials on driving, arranging transportation alternatives, and/or refer participants to training programs to improve driving skills.
Payment
Please note that payment for the DriveWise program is private pay; insurance usually does not cover the costs of assessment of driving safety.
