Interventional Pulmonology and Complicated Airway
The Interventional Pulmonology/Complicated Airway Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is one of the few programs in the United States devoted to the evaluation and treatment of patients with central airway obstruction through a multidisciplinary approach and use of all available conventional and investigational means. Directed by Dr. Armin Ernst , a nationally renowned expert on central airway obstruction, the airway center brings together pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, ENT-physicians, chest radiologists, physiologists, nurses and respiratory therapists. All patients are comprehensively evaluated and treated by an appropriate combination of the above services tailored to the individual problem. A clinical and research focus is the evaluation and treatment of patients with benign airway obstruction and tracheoiualacia.
Many new technologies and innovations, including Photodynamic Therapy for airway lesions and early cancer, were first performed in the Boston area and the New England region under Dr. Ernst's leadership. Active protocols to evaluate the effectiveness of early cancer detection with blue-light bronchoscopy are in progress. Endobronchial ultrasound is performed routinely to enhance staging of lung tumors and to guide surgical therapy.
