Services and Programs
The Division is committed to providing extraordinary, compassionate and personalized care to our patients. Through the expertise of our internationally recognized physicians, integrated multidisciplinary delivery of care, commitment to patient safety and comfort, and unique resources available at the BIDMC, our Division serves to advance the health of the local community, patients from the greater Boston area and Massachusetts, as well as national and international communities.
Clinical evaluations and treatment are provided by our Division members through the following established services:
Medical ICU Service
Care for critically ill patients are provided in the Medical Intensive Care Units located on both East and West campuses of the BIDMC, and supervised by on-site critical care specialists 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.
Pulmonary Ambulatory Center
For ambulatory patients requiring outpatient consultations for the diagnosis and management of a variety of general pulmonary symptoms and conditions, including preoperative assessment, services are provided Monday through Friday in the Pulmonary Ambulatory Center located in the Shapiro Clinical Center, East Campus.
Asthma and Dyspnea Center
For ambulatory patients requiring specialty services for the evaluation and management of symptoms of dyspnea or "breathlessness," services are provided in the Asthma and Dyspnea Center, located in Shapiro Clinical Center, East Campus.
Pulmonary Hypertension Center
For ambulatory patients requiring specialty services for the evaluation and management with suspected or known pulmonary hypertension (including idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension as well as pulmonary hypertension due to other causes), services are provided in the Pulmonary Hypertension Center located in the Shapiro Clinical Center, East Campus.
Thoracic Oncology Center
For ambulatory patients with known or suspected malignancies of the chest, lungs or airways, services are provided in the Thoracic Oncology Center located in the Shapiro Clinical Center, East Campus.
Pulmonary Function Laboratory
Diagnostic testing of lung function for ambulatory patients is performed in the Pulmonary Function Laboratory, located in the Shapiro Clinical Center, East Campus.
Inpatient Pulmonary Consultation Service
For hospitalized patients requiring consultation to assist in the evaluation and management of a variety of common and uncommon symptoms and diseases of the lungs. Inpatient pulmonary consultation is available 24 hours/day 7 days/week, and is provided by the Pulmonary Consultation Service on both East and West Campuses.
The Sleep Disorders Center
A comprehensive center staffed jointly by physicians from the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Division as well as the Department of Neurology, located in the Shapiro Center on the East Campus. Comprehensive evaluation and management of ambulatory patients is available for the full range of sleep disorders at the center.
Inpatient Sleep Consultation Service
We provide consultative services for aid in evaluation and treatment of the full range of sleep disorders that are relevant to the inpatient population. This novel inpatient support service is new to BIDMC as of 2007 providing important support for management of sleep disordered breathing in important populations, such as those with peri-operative issues and heart failure. The service is staffed by fellows in the ACGME accredited Sleep Medicine Program at BIDMC and BIDMC attendings in Sleep Medicine.
Interventional Pulmonary-Complex Airways Center
Ambulatory or hospitalized patients requiring Interventional Pulmonology Services can be referred to the Interventional Pulmonary Program located on the 2nd floor of the Deaconess Building, West campus.
Interstitial Lung Diseases Center
For ambulatory patients with known or suspected interstitial lung diseases (including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis), services are provided by the Interstitial Lung Disease Center, located in the Shapiro Clinical Center, East Campus.
