Ethics Liaison Program

About Us

The Ethics Liaison Program was initiated in 2006 as a way of engaging a larger and more broadly representative group of BIDMC staff in the Medical Center’s ethics activities. Ethics Liaisons are selected by Department or Division chiefs, serving renewable year-long terms with three primary functions:

  1. Informing colleagues in the Liaison’s clinical or administrative unit about BIDMC Ethics Programs, including the Liaison’s role, the 24/7 availability of the Ethics Support Service (ESS), and the educational activities provided through the ESS

  2. Reviewing annually “ethics” activities or needs (related to clinical or administrative practice, policy, or education) in each Liaison’s unit, so that an annual plan for how best to support those activities or address unmet needs can be developed in collaboration with the ESS and Ethics Advisory Committee (EAC)
  3. Serving as a primary liaison to our contact for the ESS and EAC if ethics issues related to the Liaison’s unit are identified

In addition to serving in these roles, Ethics Liaisons attend a special orientation session providing an overview of BIDMC Ethics Programs. They receive a binder of materials about clinical and organizational ethics, and a copy of a leading medical ethics text. Liaisons are also invited to join month “Ethics Liaison Case Discussions,” and are encouraged to attend the three-day Annual Ethics Course offered by the HMS Division of Medical Ethics each June. In 2007-08 and beyond, expanding the support given to Ethics Liaisons in their work will be one of the highest priorities of BIDMC Ethics Programs.
