The Foot Center and Vascular Surgery
As one of the premiere research and education vascular surgery programs, BIDMC and the Joslin Clinic provide superior comprehensive services for all problems of the arterial and venous systems. Our vascular team recognizes the urgent need for diabetic patients to thoroughly manage both their vascular and arterial care. Data have shown that approximately 15-20% of all diabetes patients are hospitalized because of vascular problems- primarily foot problems. If vascular issues are left untreated and unmanaged, patients face the high risk of amputation of the lower extremities.
In both the inpatient and outpatient setting, the Joslin/BIDMC Foot Center provides a full range of services for treating lower extremity complications. Staffed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians specializing in podiatry, vascular surgery, infectious disease, orthopedics, plastic/reconstructive surgery and diabetology, the medical specialists have the expertise in the treatment of the diabetic foot. Renowned for participating in novel and pioneering research studies, the medical team utilizes novel treatments, including vascular bypass techniques and reconstructive foot surgery procedures.
Other services include:
- Comprehensive foot care and treatment for people with diabetes
- Prevention of lower-extremity amputations
- Treatment of sever, acute and chronic infections of the foot
