Monthly Ethics Case Conferences

The BIDMC-wide Monthly Ethics Case Conference offers a forum for examining cases that involved the Ethics Support Service. The conference has the dual aim of inviting peer discussion about how these cases were handled, and learning from these cases about how we might improve clinical ethics-related care and education within BIDMC.

The conferences attract a large interdisciplinary audience, and provide opportunities for staff members at BIDMC to enhance their understanding of clinical ethics in ways that have direct practical relevance to their own patient care. A wide range of topics and ethical dilemmas are discussed throughout the year, in an effort to attract a diverse audience and cover the many ethical challenges that BIDMC staff encounter. The format emphasizes audience participation, promoting an open exchange of ideas and experiences.

Recent conferences have dealt with such topics as:

  • Ethical Issues for Pharmacists
  • HIV privacy in the 21st century: Clinical, Ethical, Legal and Systems Issues
  • Dementia and G-tubes: Loving Care or Force Feeding?
  • Issues of Guardianship
  • Gifts for Industry: Always Morally Tainted?
  • When the Usual Medical Standard of Care Conflicts with Religious Beliefs

BIDMC Monthly Case Conferences are generally held the second Monday of each month (September-June) from 12:30p-1:30p. Conferences are only open to BIDMC employees due to the confidential nature of cases discussed.
