The department of emergency medicine and the department of orthopedics jointly sponsor the division of sports medicine at BIDMC. The division has three core goals - patient care, education, and research.
Sports medicine clinics provide care to patients with sports and musculoskeletal related injuries. These clinics include patients initially seen in the ED as well as new patients and consultations from other physicians. Other areas of patient care include coverage of athletic events, including athletes on the high school, college, and professional level.
Resident education is important focus of the division. In the second year of the EM residency, each resident works in the sports medicine clinic and partakes in didactic sessions focusing on sports medicine injuries. The emergency department's unique role as the Boston Red Sox first aid provider gives our residents the opportunity to learn field management of sports injuries at professional world class sporting events.
Director: Ryan Friedberg, MD, residency trained in both emergency medicine and orthopedic surgery, board certified in emergency medicine, certificate of added qualification in sports medicine.
