Mission Statement
The Center for IBS and Functional Bowel Disorders at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is commited to providing patients with access to a multidisciplinary approach to the management of the various aspects of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and other functional bowel disorders. We believe that proper diagnosis and treatment of IBS and other functional bowel disorders depends upon a strong patient-provider relationship, the focus of which support, the setting of mutual treatment goals, and the establishment of a realistic plan of care.
Multidisciplinary Team Approach
The Center for IBS and Functional Bowel Disorders takes a multidisciplinary team approach to management and treatment of these conditions, utilizing experts in the field of functional bowel disorders and employing one or more of the following:
- Nutrition counseling
- Food allergy testing
- Cognitive behavior feedback
- Pelvic floor biofeedback
- Pain management
- IBS education and support
- Clinical trials for new IBS and chronic constipation therapies
- Complementary and alternative therapies such as hypnosis, acupuncture, relaxation response, and guided imagery
The use of a multidisciplinary team approach lends both providers and patients the opportunity to tailor treatment plans to the patient’s unique symptoms and needs, while emphasizing the relationship between the patient and the team of caregivers.
Patients Appropriate for Referral:
Patients with a variety of diagnoses, including irritable bowel syndrome, swallowing disorders, chronic constipation, chronic abdominal pain, fecal incontinence, intestinal pseudo-obstruction, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), nausea and vomiting.
