Pioneers in Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and Barretts Esophagus
Ram Chuttani, M.D., and Douglas Pleskow, M.D., internationally acknowledged leaders in endoscopy, are pioneering innovative treatments for gastroesophageal reflux disease and Barretts esophagus, a pre-cancerous condition of the esophagus. Their endoscopic Plicator® procedure offered superb control of GERD in properly selected patients. They are currently pioneering novel endoscopic procedures for Barretts esophagus. These include narrow band imaging and confocal microscopy for early diagnosis of dysplasia/cancer and BARRx radiofrequency ablation and Cryotherapy for treatment.
Advancing GI Interventional Care
In the BIDMC Center for Advanced Endoscopy, novel enteral stent procedures help manage malignant gastric outlet obstruction and malignant colonic obstruction. Physicians use capsule endoscopy to evaluate for gastrointestinal bleeding of obscure origin and for malabsorption.
BIDMC was also the first in New England to offer BARRx therapy for Barrett's esophagus, a cutting-edge approach using radiofrequency ablation against pre-cancerous mucosa . Physicians also offer photodynamic therapy for the treatment of Barrett's with high-grade dysplasia and esophageal cancer.
