School and Camp Physicals

School and Camp Physicals

School and camp physicals are routine health physical examinations that are provided by a physician or nurse practitioner. All children and adolescents are required to have a physical before they enroll in school or attend camp. At Bowdoin Street Health Center we have an excellent team of pediatric and family practice providers who perform school and camp physical examinations for children of all ages from those starting pre-school to those entering college.

During a physical examination the provider ensures that the patient is healthy and physically ready to start school or enroll in camp. The provider also discusses important health issues with the patient and guardian and reviews the social and family history. Immunizations are also checked to make sure the child is ready to start school or camp.

Any forms that the school or camp requires the provider to fill out must be brought in at the time of the visit. It is also required for a child to be accompanied by parent or guardian or by an adult with permission from parent or guardian.  Teens will be seen without their parent's permission.

For children starting school it is recommended that the appointments for physicals are scheduled early in the summer, or at least a month before school starts. For summer camps, appointments should be made well before the school year ends.
