Boston Marathoners Support Healthy Champions
Marathoners Raise $33,000 for Healthy Champions
On April 18, 2011, thousands of runners from across the world gathered to compete in the 115th running of the Boston Marathon. Five of these dedicated athletes ran for a cause near and dear to our hearts: Bowdoin Street Health Center's own Healthy Champions. For the second year, John Hancock Financial Services, sponsor of the Boston Marathon, donated five race numbers to Bowdoin Street Health Center to be designated for runners each willing to raise at least $5,000 for the Healthy Champions program.
Runners Michelle Hughes Benfer, Keith Desfosses, and Alex McLachlan joined Beth Israel Deaconess runners Kris Laping (running her first marathon) and Guy Fish, MD, to exceed their collective $25,000 fundraising goal.
"These runners have set a great example for our Healthy Champions," said Adela Margules, Executive Director of Bowdoin Street Health Center. "Healthy Champions is about young people taking a leadership role in this community to promote healthy behaviors. Our Healthy Champions are proud of "their" Marathoners". We are especially grateful to Carol Fulp and Foster Aborn of John Hancock for making it all possible."
