Legendary Red Sox pitcher Jim Lonborg, Wally the Green Monster and the Longwood Grille & Bar joined forces recently to support the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Heart Walk team in its annual campaign to raise funds for heart research.
A rally for members of the BIDMC Heart Walk team took place Aug. 12 at the Longwood Grille & Bar, a restaurant associated with the Inn at Longwood Best Western hotel in the Longwood Medical Area. The Grille donated space for the event and made a generous contribution to the Heart Walk team. In addition, members of the restaurant's wait staff and BIDMC Heart Walk team members made personal donations. The event raised almost $450 toward the team's $50,000 goal.
"We really appreciate the Longwood Grille's support for BIDMC walkers," said Lonborg, pitching star of the Red Sox' 1967 Impossible Dream season and honorary chairman of the BIDMC Heart Walk team. "Every dollar counts when it comes to fighting heart disease."
The Heart Walk raises funds for the American Heart Association's cardiovascular research and education programs. This year, the Walk will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, on the Esplanade. Lonborg will greet the public and sign autographs at the BIDMC tent hosted by the CardioVascular Institute, which is once again spearheading the BIDC team.
