Areas of Excellence

We are renowned for excellence in surgical oncology with particular emphasis on pancreas, breast, colon and rectal, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, liver, melanoma, neurosurgical, prostate, bladdersarcoma and thoracic cancers.

Our BIDMC surgeons pioneer leading-edge techniques, continually reviewing outcomes to enhance care quality. We offer advancements in extended surgical resections (operations), minimally invasive surgery, and organ-sparing techniques.

As an academic medical center, BIDMC features key advantages in experience (high volumes of procedures for improved outcomes) and access to the latest research and investigational therapies – but with uncommon personalized attention and compassion. Multidisciplinary Care

Surgical oncologists work closely with a multidisciplinary team of physicians and other health care professionals, including medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and nurses, to develop individualized treatment plans.

Surgery is often the first procedure to diagnose and/or treat many “solid” cancers (an abnormal mass of tissue that forms a tumor in a specific organ, such as breast or prostate). Learn more about the different types of cancer-related surgeries >>

Clinical Trials and Research

You may benefit from standard protocols (treatment guidelines) that improve the outcome of your particular cancer and symptoms. Or you may qualify for one of our extensive clinical trials – research studies that are designed to find better treatments for cancer based on the most updated information from around the country.

As a founding member of the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC), Beth Israel Deaconess is part of the largest cancer research consortium in the world, with access to a broad array of the most current clinical trials. The BIDMC cancer clinical trials office coordinates trials in connection with DF/HCC and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), among others. Learn more about the clinical trials we offer >>
