Message from the Directors

"We want to welcome you to the Biologic Therapy Program. Our program is nationally recognized for our leadership in the treatment of metastatic melanoma and kidney cancer. We offer our patients a wide variety of treatment options, including access to cutting-edge clinical research trials. We also strive to deliver the highest quality supportive care for our patients and their families.

We also want to welcome you to this website. This site provides detailed information about the Biologics program at BIDMC. We hope to answer many of the questions that you and your family members have about your disease and treatment options. We have included visual materials, scientific information, and many other digital resources that will help you feel like you are actually here at BIDMC with us. You will also find links to connect you with one of our doctors or nurses by phone or email to answer specific questions you may have.

In the Biologic Therapy Program, we utilize a team approach to offer full service cancer care. Our team consists of Medical Oncologists, Nurse Practitioners and Coordinators, Oncology Fellows, and Clinical Research Associates. At your initial visit, an Oncology Fellow, and Nurse Coordinator, and an Attending Oncologist will review your case in detail. A Clinical Research Associate may meet you at one of your appointments to ask if you are interested in participating in a study. Our studies are completely voluntary and will not affect your medical care should you decide not to participate.

The information that is gathered at your first visit will be presented at our weekly patient conference. Therefore, our final recommendations about your care will represent the views of the Biologic Therapy Program as a whole.

Our program has access to many exceptional resources at BIDMC. We regularly consult with surgeons, radiologists, radiation oncologists, nutritionists and pain management specialists, and can offer our patients timely and efficient referrals to these services as needed. We have a team of social workers dedicated to the special needs of oncology patients. They will be glad to meet with you and your family at any time. In addition, BIDMC is renowned for the exceptional quality of its nursing staff.

We are pleased that your physician has chosen to refer you to our program and recognize that he or she is placing an enormous trust in our ability to offer you exceptional care. We are always available by phone if you, or your referring physician, have any questions about your plan of care. We will work with you to ensure that your physician’s trust is rewarded with a very positive experience for you and your family.

Sincerely yours,

Michael B. Atkins, MD

David F. McDermott, MD
