BOSTON – Two members of the Department of Urology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) have received Young Investigator awards at the annual meetings of the Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO) and the Society of Basic Urologic Research (SBUR), both of which were held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the American Urological Association in San Antonio in May.
Martin Sanda, MD, director of BIDMC’s Prostate Cancer Care Center and Visiting Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, received the 2005 Young Investigator Award from the SUO, presented annually to the individual who has made outstanding contributions to the field of urologic oncology within 10 years of completing his or her urology residency.
A nationally recognized prostate-cancer surgeon, Sanda has led several nationwide clinical trials to evaluate quality of life following treatment for prostate cancer, and was named to the registry of the Best Doctors in America in 2003-2004. A graduate of Yale University, Sanda received his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City and completed his residency at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.
Also honored during the AUA meeting was Aria F. Olumi, MD, director of minimally invasive urologic surgery at BIDMC and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. Olumi received the 2005 Young Investigator Award from the SBUR, presented annually to recognize the significant contributions of an investigator under the age of 40 in the field of basic urologic research.
Olumi’s laboratory focuses on the mechanisms of programmed cell death in renal and prostate cancer models, in particular defining and refining the molecules of cancer cells that are resistant to a new anti-cancer agent, TRAIL (tumor necrosis factor related apoptosis inducing ligand).
A graduate of the University of California, San Diego, Olumi received his medical degree from the University of Southern California. He completed his residency at the Harvard Program in Urology (Longwood Area) and completed a three-year molecular medicine fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.
