Patient Testimonials

February, 2006

To The Staff of BIDMC Urology Department,

On December 5, 2005, I was examined by my local urologist because I had been experiencing frequent urination. Due to the doctor's suspicions a biopsy of my prostate gland was taken. On December 12, 2005 it was confirmed that I had cancer of the prostate gland. My annual physicals had always produced a normal PSA result and no irregularity of the prostate gland had ever been evident. To say that I was 'floored' would be an understatement. What occurred in the weeks that followed was beyond my wildest expectations.

On the following day, December 13, I elected to contact BIDMC to arrange for a consultation. I chose BIDMC because of its outstanding reputation and the superior imaging capability available. How delighted and relieved I was to be offered an appointment with Dr. Martin Sanda and Dr. Irving Kaplan on the very next day. The doctors' secretary, Renee, was so very helpful in arranging for the transfer of medical information so the doctors would be better prepared to help me. Both Drs. Sanda and Kaplan were extremely patient, knowledgeable and compassionate when discussing my situation with my wife and me. They provided us with ample information that allowed us to make what we felt was the right decision for our future. On January 6, 2006 I had my prostate gland removed. As a result of this surgery it's a pretty safe bet that I am without cancer. All lab results suggest this to be the case.

I, and my wife, wish to thank BIDMC, Dr. Martin Sanda, and his entire staff for saving my life. Under the worst of conditions we were fortunate enough to have the best of care, and the very best of results.

Thank you again for your kind response to my original email. My husband and I saw Dr. Sanda and his associate, Dr. Kim, a radiologist, this Tuesday. It was a dream of an experience. Dr. Sanda answered all questions with great brilliance and patience, saw us promptly and gave us over an hour of his time. Dr. Kim was equally gracious and informative. Finally, after many doctor visits, wenow know what to do and where to do it. Our relief was overwhelming. Will we stay here on the Vineyard and my husband will go through the treatment at the prostate center. In his case, it seems he can safely do the radiation seed implants so Dr. Sanda's considerable talent won't be required, but his center and his guidance were so crucial and so reassuring. If only all the medical world were like this. It is not, as you well know. This is medical heaven, and thanks to you we found it. My gratitude is boundless. My father was an internist and researcher who worked on Malaria and cancer and also taught. He's no longer with us, but if he were he would be happy and also grateful.

Warmest regards,

I am writing to commend the treatment I have received from Dr. Martin Sanda and his team at your hospital. I am a 70 year old prostate cancer patient who came to Dr. Sanda in January for a second opinion diagnosis and treatment evaluation. I had picked up on your hospital web site, the announcement that Dr. Sanda had joined your staff. So in a sense, he was a self referral. From that first meeting in January to the surgery, early in February to the post operative meeting this past Monday, I have been treated in a manner that one could only hope for. He has been thoroughly professional, detailed and patient with me. This along with his record of training and actual practice experience made my decisions to go forward with the surgery, very easy and comfortable. The results and my recovery have been remarkable. His patients are the ones who really matter but the hospital and its management should also hear from his patients about the extraordinary care this doctors has provided. He will be an easy referral if any of my friends or acquaintences need his special skills. Dr. Sanda is a tremendous asset to your hospital and the community. I am most grateful, for sure.
