Bubley, MD, Director, Genitourinary Oncology Director of Genitourinary Oncology at BIDMC and is Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. As Director of the multidisciplinary genitourinary cancer program at BIDMC involving medical, surgical and radiation oncologists as well as pathologists and basic scientists, he heads numerous clinical/translational trials. Rupal S. Bhatt, MD, PhD, MMS is Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, an attending physician in the GU Oncology Rupal S. Bhatt, MD, PhD, MMSProgram and researcher Dr. Bhatt currently cares for patients with prostate, bladder and testis cancer and has participated in clinical trials in these fields. Dr. Bhatt focuses her research on Renal Cell Carcinoma and Prostate Cancer with a special interest in the Mechanisms of Resistance to Antiangiogenic Therapy. For this work was awarded Young Investigator Awards from AACR and ASCO and was also was awarded the ASCO Career Development Award. Currently Dr. Bhatt is in the second year of her five year Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award from the National Cancer Institute designed to train clinicians committed to a career in laboratory or field-based research or to translational research with a laboratory focus.

She completed her medical training and graduate training at Cornell University Medical College and The Rockefeller University where she received her MD/PhD degrees. She trained at BIDMC as an intern and resident and began her research at BIDMC as well as joining the Hematology and Oncology Fellowship program and was recruited to join the medical staff as an attending physician in 2006. In addition to her clinical work and research Dr. Bhatt received her Masters of Medical Science during her participation in the Clinical Investigator Training Program in 2008. Rupal Bhatt, MD, PhD

Urology

Martin G. Sanda, MD, Director of the Prostate Cancer Program

Martin G. Sanda, MD is Director of the Prostate Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Associate Professor of Urology at Harvard Medical School. He is a co-Leader of the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center Prostate Cancer Program (that integrates prostate cancer care and research across all Harvard-affiliated teaching hospitals). A graduate of Yale (BA 1983, cum laude) and Columbia (MD 1987),  Dr. Sanda was Associate Professor and Associate Chair of Urology at the University of Michigan from 1995-2003, after having completed his urology residency at Johns Hopkins under Dr. Patrick Walsh (who originated nerve-sparing prostate surgery).

One of only a few urologists who have been selected to Boston Magazine’s list of ‘Top Doctors’ for the past 6 consecutive years, Dr. Sanda has performed nearly 1000 prostatectomy operations, and is the only urologist equally proficient in both robotic and open prostatectomy techniques. Yet Dr. Sanda is more than a just an expert prostate surgeon: He has also forged new horizons to improve care choices and outcomes for men with prostate cancer regardless of whether or not they choose surgery as their primary treatment. At BIDMC, he leads studies developing prostate cancer vaccines and urine tests to detect prostate cancer. His prostate cancer studies have led to numerous national academic awards and over 100 publications.

Dr. Sanda has spearheaded a shift in the focus of prostate cancer care beyond simply extending life and toward optimizing quality of life. This paradigm is based on providing individualized information about what to expect after treatment, and refining the quality of surgery and the quality of other prostate care options as well. Toward this goal, Dr. Sanda is leading the largest ongoing American study of prostate cancer treatment outcomes. His article regarding prostate cancer quality of life in the New England Journal of Medicine (2008) is a unique resource that helps patients and doctors choose treatment to fit each patient’s individual needs and circumstances. William C. DeWolf, MD. FACS, is Chief of the Division of Urology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). He is also the William C. DeWolf, MD, FACS, Chief, Division of Urologychaired BIDMC Professor of Urologic Surgery at Harvard Medical School (HMS). Dr. DeWolf received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and his M.D. from the Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine. Following a general surgery residency at Rush Presbyterian Saint Luke’s Hospital in Chicago, Dr. DeWolf completed additional training in General Surgery Transplantation and Urologic Surgery at the University of Minnesota.

An esteemed surgeon, Dr. DeWolf’s clinical interests include urologic malignancies and prostate diseases. He is also Director of the Urologic Research Laboratories at BIDMC. Dr. DeWolf’s research focuses on the molecular genetics and biochemistry of prostate and other urologic cancers. He is currently conducting stem cell research to gain a better understanding of how urologic cancers form, and he has made significant progress in this area.

Dr. DeWolf has received several major awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), American Urological Association, and, on three separate occasions, the Harvard Program in Urology. He served as President of the National Urologic Forum, and is a member of organizations such as the Society for Basic Urologic Research, American Association for Cancer Research, and American Society of Genitourinary Surgeons. He is on the Editorial Board of Urology, and is a peer reviewer for several other major urologic and scientific journals. Dr. DeWolf has also authored or co-authored more than 200 articles and chapters, which have been published in leading medical journals and in medical textbooks. William Dewolf, MD

Wagner, MD, Director,Minimally Invasive Urologic SurgeryBIDMC. He was recruited to the urologic faculty at BIDMC in 2006 to develop and lead the robotic surgery program after completing a fellowship in laparoscopy and robotics at The Brady Institute of Urology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Wagner specializes in minimally invasive surgical approaches to urologic cancer, particularly prostate and kidney cancer. His research interests include evaluating health related quality of life in patients following prostate and kidney surgery and discovering new ways to train surgeons in robotics. To this end he has developed a novel surgical simulator for robotic prostatectomy. Dr. Wagner has authored several textbook chapters and peer reviewed articles describing his robotic prostatectomy technique and has performed hundreds of robotic prostatectomy surgeries.
