For patients with newly diagnosed prostate cancer , the BIDMC Prostate Care Center offers multi-disciplinary care wherein a team of prostate cancer specialists from urology, radiation oncology, and medical oncology evaluate and counsel prostate cancer patients and their spouse/partners regarding treatment options and expected outcomes. By providing treatment recommendations and explanations from multiple disciplines at a single setting, the Prostate Care Center approach obviates the inconvenience of multiple visits, to separate specialists, with sometimes mutually contradictory recommendations. Diagnostic expertise is provided by nationally reknown pathologists and innovative imaging studies by leading radiologists. The BIDMC Prostate Care Center specialists provide published data regarding their patients' outcomes. These quality of life and cancer control outcome data are the basis for regional and national benchmarks of quality prostate cancer care. This multi-disciplinary clinic is conducted on the 5th floor of the Shapiro outpatient facility.
For patients with elevated PSA or abnormal digital rectal exam of the prostate , the BIDMC Prostate Care Center provides trans-rectal ultrasound and prostate biopsy services. Evaluation of elevated PSA or abnormal DRE (including TRUS and biopsy if deemed appropriate) is performed by the Prostate Care Center urologists in the 3rd floor of the Shapiro outpatient facility.
A broad range of prostate cancer specialists encompassing Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Pathology, Radiology and Urology provide a variety of prostate cancer clinical services through the Center.
Research and Clinical Trials at BIDMC prostate care center: There is more to be done in the search for accurate methods of very early detection and cure for prostate cancer. At BIDMC, we are continuously searching for the answers to these very difficult questions. We have a number of clincial trials designed specifically for patients ith early and late prostate cancer. We also continuously collect prostate tissue samples from patients undergoing surgery for prostate cancer and store them in our tissue bank. These tissue and blood samples are continuously used by our research team in their search for a cure to this very common disease.
