Colon and Rectal Cancer Program
Our colon and rectal cancer program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center offers multidisciplinary expertise in diagnosing and treating cancers of the:
- Large intestine (colon and rectum)
- Anus (the canal at the end of the large intestine, which sits below the rectum)
- Small intestine (if you have Crohn’s disease, you may be at risk for this rarer type of cancer, which is typically unusual in the population at large)

A Leader in the Field
Deborah A. Nagle, MD, chief of colorectal surgery at BIDMC, is nationally recognized for her specialty expertise and vast experience in laparoscopic colectomy, a less invasive approach to removing part of the large intestine to treat colon cancer and other digestive disorders. She and her colleagues at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center contribute to the future of colorectal care through innovative treatment, research, clinical trials, publications and society leadership positions, as well as training Harvard Medical School students and providing graduate medical education.
BIDMC participates in the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, and the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, and is a founding member of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC) – Harvard’s National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. We collaborate extensively on clinical trials with the DF/HCC.
