Committee on Social Responsibility
Co-led by Surgery Vice Chairman Allen Hamdan, MD, Vascular Surgery, and Ted James, MD, MS, FACS, Surgical Oncology, the Department of Surgery's Committee for Social Responsibility comprises faculty, trainees, and staff throughout the department. Established through discussion and consensus, the committee’s priorities are focused on several important areas of social responsibility: hunger, homelessness, childhood education, and medical missions. Following are some of the committee's ongoing projects.

FOOD IS MEDICINE ANNUAL GALA
BIDMC is an official partner of the Greater Boston Food Bank and sponsors the annual Food is Medicine Gala event, which in the past five years has raised more than $442,000 for hungry families served by the GBFB. Click here to read about the 2017 Food is Medicine Gala.
FOOD GIFT CARD DRIVE
The Committee on Social Responsibility participates in the Food Gift Card Drive to benefit clients and families of Action for Boston Community Development in the Parker Hill/Fenway Neighborhood Service Center. To best fit the needs of their food pantry clients, ABCD requests gift card donations to Stop & Shop, Shaw’s, and Target as these are the stores that are more accessible to the families in need.
RED SOX SCHOLARS
The Red Sox Scholars is an award-winning program run by the Red Sox Foundation, the official team charity of the Boston Red Sox. Each year, BIDMC provides 10 volunteers to serve as "Medical Champions" for the Scholars.
SOX FOR SOCKS
The Committee is involved in the Division of Podiatry’s annual Sox for Socks drive for homeless men, women, and children served by Boston Health Care for the Homeless.
Each year, the Committee collects toiletries for at-risk teenagers served by the Sidney Borum Health Center, one of BIDMC’s affiliated community centers.
