Committee on Social Responsibility

Co-led by Surgery Vice Chairman Allen Hamdan, MD, Vascular Surgery, and John Tumolo, MBA, the Department of Surgery's Committee for Social Responsibility comprises faculty, trainees, and staff throughout the department. Established through discussion and consensus, the committee’s priorities are focused on several important areas of social responsibility: hunger, homelessness, childhood education, and medical missions. Following are some of the committee's ongoing projects.

If you would like to learn more about the Committee on Social Responsibility, please contact John Tumolo at jtumolo@bidmc.harvard.edu.

FOOD IS MEDICINE ANNUAL GALA

BIDMC is an official partner of the Greater Boston Food Bank and sponsors the annual Food is Medicine Gala event, which in the past four years has raised more than $317,000 for hungry families served by the GBFB. Click here to read about the 2016 Food is Medicine Gala.

FOOD GIFT CARD DRIVE

The Committee on Social Responsibility participates in the Food Gift Card Drive to benefit clients and families of Action for Boston Community Development in the Parker Hill/Fenway Neighborhood Service Center. To best fit the needs of their food pantry clients, ABCD requests gift card donations to Stop & Shop, Shaw’s, and Target as these are the stores that are more accessible to the families in need.

RED SOX SCHOLARS

The Red Sox Scholars is an award-winning program run by the Red Sox Foundation, the official team charity of the Boston Red Sox. Each year, BIDMC provides 10 volunteers to serve as "Medical Champions" for the Scholars.

SOX FOR SOCKS

The Committee is involved in the Division of Podiatry’s annual Sox for Socks drive for homeless men, women, and children served by Boston Health Care for the Homeless.

TOILETRY DRIVE

Each year, the Committee collects toiletries for at-risk teenagers served by the Sidney Borum Health Center, one of BIDMC’s affiliated community centers.
