Inpatient Unit

Mission Statement

The mission of the Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Unit is to serve the patients of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center by providing state-of-the-art psychiatric assessment and individualized, compassionate, evidence-based treatment. As the psychiatric unit of a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, we are committed to training, teaching, and the advancement of psychiatric research and practice.

Our mission is achieved through the provision of excellent clinical care to our patients and families and by support of the highest standards in training and research activities. A multidisciplinary team provides clinical care and training. Our staff is committed to mutual respect and collaboration between individuals and disciplines. Patients receive individualized care and multifaceted treatment guided by best practice. Through individual, milieu and group treatments, intensive family intervention, and comprehensive discharge planning, we work with our patients to create a healthier and more stable future for them.

Mission-Driven Priorities for the Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Unit

Patients in need of an acute inpatient level of psychiatric care are those who present a danger to themselves or others or are unable to care for themselves due to mental illness. Priority for admission is given to patients meeting these criteria who are referred from the Beth Israel Deaconess Emergency Department or inpatient medical-surgical services.

The resources of the Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Unit are directed toward patients with major mental illness, including

  • those with a first onset of symptoms
  • those with a recent exacerbation of symptoms
  • those with medical comorbidity who are in need of intensive psychiatric treatment but not in need of medical admission

Each potential admission is reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine the appropriate treatment setting.

Considerations in this assessment include:

  • the patient's ability to participate in and benefit from the intensive treatment milieu.
  • availability of a specialized unit that would better serve the patient's needs, such as an eating disorder unit, a geriatric unit, a traumatic brain injury unit, or a developmental disabilities unit
