What are probiotics?
Probiotics are friendly or "good" bacteria that, when ingested in adequate amounts, are beneficial to health. These healthy bacteria fight harmful bacteria, preventing illness and gastrointestinal infections. In the marketplace, probiotics are most commonly found in yogurt but also in other fermented foods such as miso, raw kimchi, raw sauerkraut, and kefir; they are found in much greater quantities in probiotic supplements. Depending on the symptoms, a person may benefit from taking probiotics to improve gastrointestinal health. Discuss your situation and specific symptoms with your doctor or dietitian and decide whether you might benefit from probiotics.
