For patients newly diagnosed with prostate cancer, the BIDMC Prostate Care Program provides multidisciplinary care by a team of internationally renowned prostate cancer specialists from urology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, pathology and surgical oncology who work together to evaluate and counsel you and your spouse/partner regarding treatment options and expected outcomes. By providing treatment recommendations and explanations from multiple disciplines at a single setting, the Prostate Care Program approach obviates the inconvenience of multiple visits to see a physician from each specialty. This broad range of prostate cancer specialists encompassing Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Pathology, Radiology and Urology provide a variety of prostate cancer clinical services through the Center. Diagnostic expertise is provided by nationally renowned pathologists and innovative imaging studies by leading radiologists.
For patients with elevated PSA or and abnormal digital rectal exam (DRE) of the prostate
, the BIDMC Prostate Care Program provides trans-rectal ultrasound (TRUS) and prostate biopsy services. Evaluation of elevated PSA or abnormal DRE (including TRUS and biopsy if deemed appropriate) is performed by the Prostate Care Program urologists.
Research and Clinical Trials of BIDMC prostate care program: There is more to be done in the search for accurate methods of very early detection and cure for prostate cancer. At BIDMC, we are continuously searching for the answers to these very difficult questions. We collect prostate tissue samples from patients undergoing surgery for prostate cancer and store them in our tissue bank. These tissue and blood samples are continuously used by our research team in their search for a cure to this very common disease.
BIDMC Prostate Care Program specialists provide published data regarding their patients' outcomes. These quality of life and cancer control outcome data are the basis for regional and national benchmarks of quality prostate cancer care.
