Medical oncology is an essential component of BIDMC's comprehensive approach to treating and managing women with gynecologic cancer. BIDMC's medical gynecologic oncologists are fellowship trained clinicians and accomplished clinical investigators. They are members of the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center and play a critical role in developing novel therapeutics involving chemotherapy and biologic agents for gynecologic malignancies. Our physicians offer patients state of the art clinical trials that include the use of antiangiogenesis agents, novel drugs for recurrent disease, and innovative maintenance chemotherapy approaches. They were the first to pioneer the use of gene expression profiling (genomics) as a prognostic tool in ovarian cancer and are now extending these observations to predict the likelihood that individual patients will respond to chemotherapy.
A Coordinated Approach to Comprehensive Patient Care
Women receive comprehensive care in an environment dedicated to helping them manage the physical and emotional challenges associated with gynecologic cancer. Patients receive personalized care from gynecologic oncologists who work in partnership with a pathologist and a radiation oncologist who have special expertise in gynecologic oncology. Patients also receive support from a social worker dedicated to gynecologic oncology and BIDMC's extensive network of cancer support resources.
Exceptional Nursing Care
Gynecologic Oncology at BIDMC is further defined by an exceptional staff of nurses dedicated to caring for gynecologic cancer patients. Consistently ranked among the top 5% of (gynecologic) nurses nationwide for patient satisfaction,* these nurses are distinguished by astute clinical skills and a professional respect for the profoundly personal needs of women in their care.
Excellent Communication and Follow-up
The clinicians and administrators of the Gynecologic Oncology division at BIDMC realize that exceptional patient care must be coordinated and delivered on a continuum of care that starts with the referring physician. In addition to prompt responses to referral and consultation requests, referring physicians receive copies of all medical notes, diagnostic tests and treatment reports. Referring physicians are able to resume and manage the care of their patients confident that that they have been included in and informed about each patient's course of care at BIDMC.
