American College of Surgeons Award
The Cancer Center at BIDMC is the only program in Massachusetts, and one of only 34 in the country, to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer, a consortium of professional organizations that includes the American Cancer Society, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American College of Radiology, the Oncology Nursing Society and members of the American College of Surgeons. The commission's goal is to reduce the morbidity and mortality of cancer through education, setting standards, and monitoring the quality of care that is delivered. "This acknowledgment reflects the hard work and creative efforts of individuals from across the spectrum of this medical center," says Lowell Schnipper, MD, chief, hematology/oncology, BIDMC, and Theodore W. and Evelyn G. Berenson, Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School. "It is a reflection of the dedication, intelligence and commitment of the numerous professionals engaged in the fight against cancer at the BIDMC."
