Celebration of Life

Many of you are aware that this June 2nd will be the 20th annual Celebration of Life. I literally began this event on my kitchen table, paying my then 10 year old daughter and a friend to stuff envelopes. The first year, we gathered at BIDMC, using the Sherman Auditorium for the large events, the cafeteria for lunch (others were directed down the hall to eat in various meeting rooms), and spaces around the main hospital for the workshops. I believe a few more than 100 people came, and we considered that to be a rousing success.

In just a few years, we outgrew any available space at the hospital and moved down to the Harvard Medical School. We always have to coordinate our date with their graduation as we use the enormous tent for our morning progam and for lunch. We now have 800-1000 people attend this glorious day of celebration, community, and education. It is always hard to convince people to give up a June Sunday for a cancer day, and then they are always glad that they did. Here is more information about this free event, and the website link is

Taking place in the Harvard Medical School Quadrangle, Celebration of Life is a full day of celebration, education and kinship for the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) cancer community to raise awareness about the battle against cancer. This poignant event also welcomes men and women who receive their care from other hospitals in and around Boston — and beyond.

Since 1993, patients and their family members and close friends, along with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other cancer caregivers at BIDMC have gathered together for a daylong celebration in June. This inspiring event allows people living with cancer an opportunity to share their stories and learn from Harvard Medical School affiliated physicians, other community experts, and of course, each other.

"It's the pinnacle of the year for those who have been touched by this disease, patients and health care professionals alike," said Hester Hill Schnipper, LICSW, BCD, Chief of Oncology Social Work at BIDMC and a breast cancer survivor. "Celebration of Life 'puts a face' on cancer, while providing hope to all that fight it," Hill Schnipper adds.

The 20th Anniversary Celebration of Life event is scheduled for Sunday, June 2, 2013.
