Lifetyle Changes May Help
This is an old and familiar refrain, but one that bears repeating. All of us are interested in doing everything that we can do to increase our odds of staying healthy. After treatment has been completed, it frequently seems that there is little that we can add to our routines. We have frequently heard the advice to exercise regularly, to maintain a healthy body weight, to limit alcohol use, and to eat wisely (important note: I am definitely not suggesting here that any particular diet or foods are recommended or banned. The advice is more to do with a generally healthy diet and weight control.)
These are a pair of studies from Yale, presented at the recent ASCO meetings, that suggest that doing these common sense things may reduce recurrence risk and, therefore, benefit mortality. Common sense suggests that, even if these habits don't directly impact cancer, they will contribute to our general good health and well being.

A pair of Yale Cancer Center interventional studies involving breast cancer survivors found that lifestyle changes in the form of healthy eating and regular exercise can decrease biomarkers related to breast cancer recurrence and mortality.
The abstracts are scheduled to be presented at the 2014 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago May 30-June 3rd.
"The ﬁndings of both studies support a growing body of research that suggests lifestyle interventions lower biomarkers associated with breast cancer recurrence and mortality, and improve quality of life," said Melinda Irwin, PhD, co-program leader of the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program at Yale Cancer Center, associate professor of Epidemiology at Yale School of Public Health, and principal investigator on both studies.
