What are your vitals?

Ann Marie Grillo, RN, CN III
12 Reisman, Nursing.

What do you think ultimately made you choose BIDMC?

There is a clinical entry program at BIDMC that supports the new graduate nurse with a six-week orientation to the unit, and then another six weeks of "protected time" designed to assist with the transition into taking a full assignment of patients. There is also an assigned sponsor who serves as a mentor for the first year of clinical practice. There are CEU programs on-site, which not only makes it easier to attend workshops/seminars that are relevant to my area of practice, but it also makes it convenient to get all of my required CEUs without having to go to an outside facility.

Of the reasons you chose your profession, which are accentuated by working at BIDMC?

The opportunity to work directly with patients and their loved ones is always the most rewarding. On 12 Reisman, I have been introduced to new and different patient populations within the past few years (especially new surgical populations), which has broadened my knowledge and continues to challenge my practice on both a personal and clinical level.

What do you find most rewarding about your work that is unique to BIDMC?

There are opportunities for any nurse to contribute input on delivering the safest patient care. There are five different nursing councils within the medical center. Each group helps make decisions that affect direct patient care. Any nurse, with any level of experience, is able to join.

Generally speaking, can you describe your ideal workday?

I work a daylight rotation. The patients on my assignment can vary anywhere from 17-103 years old. Some are in the hospital because they have just had surgery, others for management of chronic or new illnesses. There is a primary nursing model of care, where every patient has a primary nurse who collaborates with the healthcare team to facilitate care in the hospital and plan for discharge. There is a wide variety of resources for me to consult and assist with this care, including: social work, case management, physical/occupational therapy, nutritionists, skin care nurses, and other clinical nurse specialists.
