Employees who are regularly scheduled to work at least 20 hours per week are eligible to participate in the Employee Benefits Program. Employees have the option of having benefits start on the first day of employment or first of the month following employment. Employees will be able to change their benefit options during the Fall Open Enrollment Period or when there is a change in status (i.e. birth, marriage).
Benefits (Paid by BIDMC and You)
During your first month of employment, you may elect comprehensive individual, dual or family coverage in one of several health insurance options. The amount you pay each week for health, dental and vision premiums will be paid with pretax dollars before federal, state, and social security taxes are withheld.
Health & Dental Plan Choices
Through Harvard Pilgrim Health Insurance you can elect the following health plans: CareGroup Value Plan, CareGroup Plus Plan or a PPO plan. When you elect the Value, Plus or PPO plan, you are automatically enrolled with Caremark for your prescription coverage. Our Dental insurance is through Delta Dental. We offer a vision plan through EyeMed Vision Care.
Other Benefit Programs
Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance, Employee Life Insurance, Health and Dependent Care Reimbursement Accounts, Pre-Paid Legal Insurance, Short-Term and Long-Term Disability Insurance, Spousal and Dependent Life Insurance.
Earned Time (Paid by BIDMC)
Earned Time (ET) is a program in which traditional sick, vacation and holiday hours are combined to provide you with maximum flexibility in determining the use of your paid time-off benefit. You are eligible for earned time if you are regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week. Based on the current ET accrual rates, full-time employees accrue 28 days annually. You will earn additional days as your years of service increase. ET is pro-rated for regular part-time employees working less than 40 hours per week.
Tuition Reimbursement (Paid by BIDMC)
After you have completed six months of employment, you may receive reimbursement of tuition costs for approved work-related courses for up to $1,500 during each calendar year. Direct patient care employees are eligible for up to $3,000 each year. After five years of service, the amount increases to $2,250 per year. This amount is pro-rated for regular part-time eligible employees.
Holiday Premium Pay (Paid by BIDMC)
Non-exempt regular employees will receive holiday premium pay based on hospital policy for hours worked on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day.
MBTA Pass Program (Paid by BIDMC and You)
Benefits eligible employees may enroll in the employer-subsidized monthly MBTA pass program by the 13 th of the previous month. BIDMC subsidizes cash sales at 45%, and passes purchased through payroll deduction are subsidized at 50% up to $115.
Parking (Paid by You)
Off-site parking with shuttle service to the hospital campus is available to employees. Please check with Commuter Services for exact availability. The Commuter Services Office can be reached at 617-667-3052. On-site parking is very limited, but may be obtainable for off-shift employees. Cost for the various lots/garages varies, and the fees will be deducted from your paycheck.
Eligible employees may save and invest pre-tax money (up to annual IRS limits) in the BIDMC 401(k) Plan through Fidelity Investments. After one year of service, eligible employees will receive a weekly matching contribution equal to 50% of the first 4% of eligible pay you defer to your 401(k) Plan account. Also, after one year of service eligible employees will receive an annual CORE contribution equal to a percentage of your eligible pay ranging from 3% to 9% based on your age and years of service. You do not need to contribute to the 401(k) Plan to receive the CORE contribution. The match and CORE contributions are vested immediately.
In addition to the 401(k) Plan eligible employees may also save and invest pre-tax money (up to the annual IRS limits) in a 403(b) Plan through Fidelity Investments. There is no match or CORE contribution to the 403(b) Plan.
Dependent Care Information and Referral Services
There are two great resources available if you are in need of information and referral service for help in choosing childcare or to obtain helpful information and resources on caring for elderly family members.
The Harvard Office for Work and Family is available to all employees, providing reference and referral information for all child-care and eldercare needs.
The Parents in a Pinch program offers backup childcare services for those times when regular childcare arrangements are not available (i.e. holidays when regular day care center is closed, between camp and school schedules).
You may sign up immediately for direct deposit and have your net pay electronically transmitted from our payroll department to the bank account(s) of your choice. Deposits will begin approximately three weeks after you have signed up. In the interim you will be paid by check.
Another great incentive for our BIDMC employees is our discount opportunities. Discount movie tickets as well as seasonal ski and water park tickets are available through the BIDMC Gift Shops. Wireless discounts are offered through the Telecommunications Office. As the Official Hospital of the Boston Red Sox, employees can use their ID badge to obtain up to two tickets for $5.00 each a half-hour after the start of a home game. Please note the Red Sox tickets are based on availability only.
Employee Assistance Program (Paid by BIDMC)
You and members of your household may take advantage of the hospital's Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which provides confidential counseling for issues small or large. The EAP also provides free legal and financial consultation as well as helpful work/life resources.
Tanger Be Well Center (Paid by You)
As an employee at BIDMC, you have the opportunity to join the Tanger Be Well Center. This on-site fitness and wellness center is located on the East Campus. Services include personal training, fitness and health education seminars and screenings, group exercise classes and massage therapy. The weekly cost is $12 with an initiation fee of $50, which is waived if you are a Harvard Pilgrim Health Care plan participant.
The Office of Workforce Development in Human Resources offers a number of opportunities for employees to enhance their job skills. This office provides free career and academic counseling, college placement testing, on-site pre-college prep courses in math, reading and English and college-level science courses. Workforce Development also offers free on-site English classes for non-native English speakers.
Workforce Development also oversees BIDMC's Pipeline Programs that sponsor employees' education and training for specific jobs at BIDMC, such as Patient Care Technician, Medical Laboratory Technician, Nurse, and Research Administrator.
