Comprehensive Care Centers

To better serve our patients and their families, BIDMC has created five comprehensive care centers. Here, specialists work together across multiple disciplines, such as medicine, surgery, pathology, radiology, oncology, anesthesia, social work and more, to diagnose each patient's disease promptly and work with them to determine the best treatment plan.

Cancer Center

The Cancer Center at BIDMC, one of the preeminent cancer research programs in the country, provides the best in early diagnosis and leading-edge treatments. Multidisciplinary teams offer 19 specialty programs, such as those focusing on breast cancer, melanoma, prostate cancer and biologic therapy. As a founding member of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, BIDMC patients benefit from more than 250 clinical trials. BIDMC was the first hospital in New England to offer CyberKnife, a non-invasive, radiation therapy system designed to treat complex and hard to reach tumors.

CardioVascular Institute

Because heart and vascular health are often interrelated, BIDMC created the CardioVascular Institute, a multidisciplinary care center that combines cardiovascular medicine, cardiac surgery and vascular/endovascular surgery. The Institute is recognized nationally for excellence in clinical care and cardiovascular research, and for educating the physicians of tomorrow. Our extensive affiliate network extends across eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. Patients achieve high quality care in their own communities and, when advanced care is needed, benefit from seamless access to the world-renowned care at BIDMC.

Among the notable cardiac programs are:

  • Groundbreaking minimally invasive valve repair and replacement
  • Boston's first all-digital catheterization suites
  • Progressive programs in peripheral vascular disease and arrhythmia
  • Women's Cardiovascular Health Program

Digestive Disease Center

The Digestive Disease Center (DDC) is, simply put, one of the very best in the world at diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal disorders. Our renowned team of experts provide novel, specialized care that is both patient-centered and multi-disciplinary. Major areas of focus include GERD, Barrett's esophagus, pancreatitis, celiac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease and colon and rectal polyps and cancers. We perform more than 30,000 procedures annually, which means, nationally, our doctors are among the most experienced in the field.

Spine Center

BIDMC's Spine Center is the only program of its kind in Boston that is co-directed by a neurosurgeon and orthopedic surgeon, reflecting true integration of these specialties. We realize that combining resources and expertise is often the best way to treat painful spine conditions, which differentiates us from other hospitals. The physicians in the Spine Center work together with patients and their primary care physicians to find the best treatment, which is often, to the patient's surprise, a non-surgical approach. Since most back and neck pain will respond to non-surgical treatment, our on-site physiatrist and pain management specialist ensure that you're getting the care that's right for you.

Transplant Institute

The Transplant Institute performs abdominal transplants (liver, kidney pancreas), and is among the largest center of its kind in New England. We are one of the oldest and most respected kidney and pancreas transplant programs in the region - not surprising given our longstanding affiliation with the world-renowned Joslin Diabetes Center. BIDMC also performed the first successful liver transplant in New England in 1983 and the first live-liver donor transplant in 1998.

The transplant team at BIDMC is committed to providing the very best care to each patient and their family throughout the entire process-from the initial evaluation to the post-operative follow-up. Research in transplant immunology and clinical trials are also integral components of the Institute.
