12 Annual Healthy Work Healthy Home Event

Each spring, BIDMC's “Healthy Work/Healthy Home” Committee holds an Environmental Awareness Day to promote and recognize environmental action at work and home.

“This program began 10 years ago as a partnership between the medical center and Health Care Without Harm,” recalls Jane Matlaw, Director of Community Relations, who launched the program and has overseen its growth. The day-long event now features a keynote address by an environmental expert, and a fair that includes educational exhibits, mercury thermometer collection, battery recycling, cell phone donation and prizes. Environmental Action Awards are given to employees and teams for initiatives in tackling environmental issues at work.

Matlaw notes, “We’ve found great partners in the community – including Triumvirate Environmental and the Boston Public Health Commission, which have supported us from the beginning. Here at BIDMC, more and more of our staff are looking at what we do through a green lens. This day has been an important way to acknowledge that and keep it going.”

BIDMC’s Environmental Champions will be celebrated as part of the 12th annual Healthy Work/Healthy Home Environmental Awards Breakfast hosted by Paul Levy, President and CEO, Tuesday, April 27, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in the Leventhal Conference Room. The keynote speaker for this year’s breakfast is Jim Hunt, Chief for Environmental and Energy Services for the City of Boston, who will discuss how the city is responding to the dangers posed by climate change.
