Long-term Volunteer Opportunities

Simulated Family Members

BIDMC has integrated a course to teach key skills and strategies related to communicating with family members of critically ill patients into the residency curriculum. This course has been highly successful, well received, and has changed the culture of our ICU. The success of this course depends on the our volunteers, who play the roles of family members of critically ill patients, and provide feedback to the residents following simulated family meetings.

The ideal volunteer for this position is someone who is enthusiastic to teach residents, enjoys acting, can draw from his/her own experience as a patient or family member of a patient, and can provide kind but constructive feedback. You will work closely a with skilled trainer and with faculty to develop the family member roles and to learn debriefing skills.

This course is on Wednesdays, 8:30-9:00am or 12:00-2:00pm. If those times do not work in your schedule, we may be adding courses in the future on other days, so you may still let us know if you are interested.

Due to the time and effort involved in developing the knowledge and skills to participate in this course, we would appreciate a minimum of six months time commitment, preferably longer.
